ELECTION PRIORITIES
Support Student Success
As a daughter of a retired life-long special education school teacher, my heart is especially conscious of the students who need additional support in their learning. I want to see every student improve and succeed beyond what they could ever imagine. One of the keys to excelling in this area is having adequate staff and support. I have consistently voted to support LCAP funds for our special needs students, to support wages for additional teachers and staff and to keep RJUHSD as an employer of choice. Our excellent working relationship with teachers and staff is critical to the success of all students. In addition, I recently voted to approve a coordinator for our EL services, as our district has now surpassed over 70 different languages spoken by our students. Our needs for English Language services will continue to grow as our community expands. Being aware of the academic needs for every student will continue to be a priority of mine.
Academic Excellence
Part of being aware of the needs of every student, comes with offering rigorous and challenging courses. I am in support of increasing AP, IB and dual enrollment courses. Again, having the necessary teachers and staff to support these programs is vital. I support incentives for teachers to pursue Master’s degrees as needed to teach our dual enrollment courses and/or CTE programs. I want RJUSHD to continue being a district where any student who dreams of going to college can, any student who wants to pursue a trade is prepared, and any student who wants to go immediately into to work force feels empowered to do so.
New Sports Fields and Facilities
In 2016, voters overwhelmingly approved Measure D, which provided for general obligation funds totaling $96M with the intent of improving and modernizing our school facilities. To date, these bonds have helped pay for improvements to all of our campuses, including a new pool at Granite Bay High, additional baseball fields at Woodcreek High and a theatre for Antelope High. Major improvement is currently underway at Roseville High School.
While our facilities continue to age, we must be aware of the current economic environment we find ourselves in. I will hold our district accountable to make sure our taxpayer dollars are used judiciously. I believe tax increases should be only used as a “last resort” and we should budget and plan accordingly to not impose additional financial burden to the public.
School Safety
We expect that when we send our kids to school that they will be safe. It’s our district’s responsibility to exceed that level of expectation. We continue to enhance our student and faculty’s safety through a partnership with the Roseville Police Department and Placer County Sheriff’s Office, a program implemented during my tenure on the board, which enhances swift intervention for campus safety.
Not only am I concerned about the physical safety of our kids, but also their overall health. I have introduced a pilot program that will detect vaping in our school’s bathrooms and other shared spaces. This will be an ongoing process as we test what technology and detection devices work best and what the most effective anti-vaping strategies are.
Family Involvement
A student will only graduate from one high school and that is an experience the entire family experiences and remembers. Every step of the way, parents, guardians and family members should have access to, involvement in and partnership with the school and their student(s). There should be open lines of communication in both directions, from home to school and vice versa. During my tenure, our board passed by unanimous vote, a policy to notify parents when their student needs to leave class for a counseling appointment or wellness center visit. This has greatly improved openness and transparency with our families and I will strive to continue this partnership with our families. Research shows a very strong correlation between parent involvement and academic achievement across all grade levels and it continues throughout high school.
Equitable opportunities.
A classroom is successful when every student is given the tools to be successful. I believe that we can be flexible to circumstances to ensure each student receives the support they need.
